Here's what's new!

Now that we have finished posting Our Susannah! Quilt, it is time to catch up on all of the exciting things happening at Erik HOMEMADE®!

Last week we annonced the Susannah! Quilt photo contest! We created the photo album (on the left side of this page) and already have received two beautiful renditions of this quilt shared by readers! We will continue to post photos as we get them, so please be sure to click on the album to view the quilts! If you are still thinking about submitting a photo, please do so! Even though it is a great contest, it is also a great way to share your quilt with other readers world-wide!

Looking around our Main/Home Page, you may already notice little changes here and there! To celebrate our third birthday on the World-Wide Web this August, we are planning a redecoration of our site! To kick things off, we moved our Mystery Quilt Category ribbons, the red ribbons on the left side of the screen, together. This should make it quicker and easier for our readers to find the mystery quilt category that they are currently following; the Photo Button icons will remain on the right side.

We have more plans for Erik HOMEMADE®: we will be adding the new category "Clip Art" to hold all of our clip art downloads, and there will be a few new pages! A glossary page and Erik's Tips are so far planned! The "Shop" page will now feature patterns, projects, and kits exclusive to Erik HOMEMADE® and will be changed to "Gift Shop". A few buttons will change places giving quicker access to information in, hopefully, a more logical order!

When you visit Erik HOMEMADE® over the next couple of weeks, keep in mind that we are testing our plans and ideas! You may notice a new graphic or photograph that comes and goes; we are simply testing things to get a better feel of the flow.

In the meantime, please know that we are working hard to bring you a fresh new site with many more projects! There will be more Susannah! Quilt photos posting and soon we will announce our next mystery quilt--and there are some really good Outdoor Eats recipes on deck! We are working on so many things to share with you! We welcome your ideas, comments, and feedback!

Crunchy Sauerkraut Slaw recipe

Crunchy Sauerkraut Slaw recipe

 

A perfect slaw for barbequed meat, this salad has a sweet dressing that makes itself! You can vary the amount of vegetables to suit your taste. Make it at least a day ahead for the flavors to mingle. This slaw keeps well in the refrigerator for almost a week!

Ingredients:

1 15oz can prepared sauerkraut, drained thoroughly

1 medium onion, finely chopped

1/2 cup celery stalks, finely chopped

1 large green pepper, finely chopped

1/2 cup carrots, finely grated

1/2 cup sugar

20 whole peppercorns, optional

In a large bowl, combine drained sauerkraut and chopped vegetables. Add sugar and mix well. Add peppercorns, if desired, and continue to stir until well blended. Place in a large bowl with a tight fitting lid and allow to chill overnight (or longer) to allow flavors to fully develop.

Yield: about 1 quart; 4-6 side servings

Final Thoughts--Our Susannah! Quilt

My mom and her college roommate have kept in touch all these years through all of the laughter and tears sixty years of friendship can muster. My younger sister and I always enjoyed the trip to Litchfield, Kentucky to visit Ginny and her family and to spend time in the steamy summer heat. Ginny took great care of all of us, and it is in her house, that I first remember seeing the quilts that would inspire my love of fabric and quilting for all of these years. To me, they were the most beautiful handmade quilts. For hours I would look at the tiny bits of cotton sewn into the most striking of patterns!

On these trips, we would get to visit "something historical" or of cultural interest: Lincoln's Birthplace, My Old Kentucky Home, and eventually to see the Stephen Foster-The Musical. To my sister, these places lacked excitement. She was always wandering off chasing the wildlife; I was a bit more intrigued and studious; a question of patience, I suppose...
