The NFL Gameday Cookbook
By Ray "Dr BBQ" Lampe, published by Chronicle Books
If one thing can be said of football fans, they sure love the game; they sure love great food, and when put together, the two couldn't be better! The NFL Gameday Cookbook revels in "the Game" and everything it encompasses from tail-gating to armchair quarter-backing, finger food to knife and fork necessity; and lots of napkins, please!
Mr Lampe, aka "Dr BBQ" walks you through, not just the recipes, but history of the teams, stadiums, players, and traditions unique to NFL culture. The recipes come from everywhere essential to the League and are uncomplicated and mouth-watering! Each recipe set is highlighted by team history and trivia along with the team logo and cultural notes about the city itself. Tempting dishes such as High Octane Sloppy Joes ("best served in a bowl with a spoon"), Bratwurst with Beer, Butter, and Onions, and Guacasalsa, are just the very kick-off! Dr BBQ includes some of his own, very relevent, very tempting, recipes--a treat in itself!
There are wonderful action photos, team memorabilia, and cheerful hand-drawn graphics throughout. Don't get the wrong idea, though, although this cookbook sounds very casual, the recipes are fantastic! Perfectly suited for a sit-down dinner, any cook will turn to these recipes again and again. What a wonderful Father's Day (lots of barbeque tips and ideas), graduation or college send-off gift, anyone who enjoys the sport will appreciate their own copy; the perfect gift for the fan who has everything!
Our own result of the Creamy Coleslaw recipe on page 195 was better than delicious--it may have become a favorite recipe; it's so easy! Although we couldn't find cane syrup at our local market, we substituted light corn syrup and had fantastic results, just the same; the dried pineapple was readily available in the produce section. We think you will like this book, too, even if you're not a die-hard football fan! In fact, we are not die-hard, but we can't wait for "outdoor weather" when we can tackle some barbeque recipes!
