BOM-Block of the Month; a single pattern for a quilt block posts each month that is part of a larger project. We generally run our BOM's, once a month, until the project is finished.
Charm Square; a 5-inch square of fabric.
Fat quarter; half of one half a of a yard cut (roughly 18-inches by 22 inches); traditionally one half of a yard cut on the fold to yield two pieces about 18"x 22".
Fat Eighth; half of one quarter a of a yard cut (roughly 9-inches by 22 inches); traditionally one quarter of a yard cut on the fold to yield two pieces about 9"x 22".
"Finished"; (as in measurements) the size of a quilt block once it is sewn into the project; less seam allowances that sew the block into the project. See also "Unfinished" (measurements). 9 x 9-inches finished=9 1/2 x 9 1/2-inches unfinished.
RST; Right Sides Together
Template; a pattern piece/element cut to a specific shape.
Seam Allowance; the extra measurement added to any part of a pattern piece that is needed to feed the fabric through the sewing machine; the distance between the stitched line and the outer edge of the fabric. For our quilting patterns, 1/4-inch, unless otherwise noted, is already included. An accurate seam allowance is necessary for the success of the pattern.
Selvedge; the finished edges of a fabric running on two sides.
Stitch-and-Flip; a quilting technique where the fabric is stitched RST, then flipped over right-side-up.
SASE; Self Addressed Stamped Envelope
"Unfinished"; (as in measurements) the size of a quilt block before it is sewn into the project; includes seam allowances that sew the block into the project. See also "finished". 9 x 9-inches finished=9 1/2 x 9 1/2-inches unfinished.
WOF; Width Of Fabric
WST; Wrong Sides Together
