Although it may sound a bit tedious, making your own liquid laundry soap is easy, economical, and green! Use a favorite scented soap since it will be the final fragrance of your detergent. We use a grater from the discount store dedicated just for this use.

1/2 bar of fragranced soap, grated
1/2 cup washing soda (powder), found in the laundry aisle of the supermarket
1/2 cup Borax powder, found in the laundry aisle of the supermarket
3 gallons of warm water
In a medium saucepan, over low heat, mix 3 3/4 cups water with grated soap. Stir until soap is throroughly dissolved. Allow to cool slightly.
Pour soap mixure into a 5 gallon bucket; add 3 gallons of warm water. Add soda and Borax and stir until powders are dissloved. Divide into smaller containers and allow to stand for 24 hours. Laundry soap will separate over time; shake well before using.
