A Victorian Christmas, Sentiments and Sounds of a Bygone Era
by Lucinda Cockrell; mandolin by Butch Baldassari, published by Thomas Nelson
As crafters we find we are constantly looking for inspiration for many different reasons for many different projects. At the holidays there are always verses to be found for greeting cards and scrapbook pages or just the right little sentiment to be jotted down on a gift tag or at the end of a letter to a dear friend; the right words can be so meaningful...
Amid the myriad of Christmas books on the front table of the bookshop we found a little gem. This delightful book is brimming with rich illustrations of vintage postcards from 1880-1920 from Ms Cockrell's personal collection. There are bells, and tiny villages, Santas, Sleighs, and peaceful chruches in the snow. Each page has a sentiment, poem, or greeting with a sweet sounding song of the past. Some are printed and others are handwritten. Its vintage style is priceless.
Attatched to the endpaper of the book is an envelope with the A Victorian Christmas CD, a delight in itself. The restful sound of familar carols and songs interpreted by Butch Badassari and his musical team are perfect for an afternoon of quiet stitching, a small gathering of friends for tea, or Christmas dinner itself. The mandolin interpretation is both sombering and meaningful.
We think A Victorian Christmas would be a wonderful gift for anyone who loves Christmas, especially a crafter or scrapbooker, or even an antique collector! The images are truly inspiring. There are even pages with lift up cards (don't miss the pull-up gift card on page 2!). We find the poems alone are worth the book and we are sure this will become a favorite reference point for almost anyone who loves Christmas as much as we do. The compact disc included with the book was a very pleaseant surprise. Although the book lists fifteen songs for the CD, our player only found twelve, however the music was so nice and understated that it really didn't matter to us; we want to keep anyway. We hope you find the same inspiration among the pages that we did, and consider what a wonderful companion to your own Christmas projects and collections this book would be.
