I have always been drawn to Gooseberry Patch books and leaflets. Vickie, JoAnn, and their "country friends" seem to agree with me...flea market chic doesn't have to be "shabby".
SEW SIMPLE is a fabulous example of how scraps, left-overs, and flea market finds can be combined into amazing sewing projects and pretty what-nots worthy of gift giving.
What drew me to this book immediately was the photographs. Not just photos of the projects, but of the recipes as well as collectibles; inspirations in their own right. So much so, that I have found myself looking for the fabrics and notions to make my project just like the ones in the book, so that I may give away or keep, my very own.
Although I have made projects from other Gooseberry Patch books and trust the instructions, I had to make the tote bag on page 18. I have had some paper doll fabric in my stash for some time that I have been itching to use, and this bag was perfect! The remaining supplies were easy to find at my local fabric store. As I suspected, the instructions and diagrams were wonderful and this bag was a success from the very start. See the photo below of my finished tote bag.
Coasters, pillows, and clever tote bags abound; pretty and practical and like the title says "thoughtful gifts and easy accessories". Even though some of these projects sound run-of-the-mill, they sure aren't simply because of the style. Gooseberry Patch does a great job of refreshing old favorites like these.
My only disappointment is that I wanted to see more: more projects, more easy ideas, more photos, and of course, more Gooseberry Patch! I guess I will have to wait for the country friends for that. In the meantime I will use this book to start some of my holiday gifts. I hope this book will inspire you as well.
My finished tote bag from SEW SIMPLE. **If you plan to make (many) more tote bags, like I do, I suggest cutting a pattern for both the tote bag fabric, as well as the lining fabric. This will speed up the process of measuring and fussy-cutting any one-way designs you wish to use. Your bag making will become a breeze!
